Male reproductive cells are produced in testicles and female reproductive cells are produced in ovaries. For a successful IVF treatment, there needs to be a sufficient amount of both male and female reproductive cells. The female patient also needs to have a healthy uterus. If the female patient cannot produce a sufficient amount of healthy eggs, the IVF treatment cannot be successful. In such cases, the couple has to employ egg donation. Egg donation is required generally for these cases:
⊕ When ovaries are removed as a treatment for a disease such as cancer.
⊕ When there is early menopause.
⊕ When there is a some sort of anomaly in the eggs or the ovaries.
⊕ When there are repeated cases of miscarriage.
⊕ When the age of the patient has advanced to a certain stage.
